A shipping container house can also serve various other purposes, for production, storage, administration and the like, but its basic meaning is connected with housing. A free-standing shipping container house is often closely connected with a family (family house) or a farm, where there were also rooms for livestock and storage. Townhouses usually adjoin each other and form a frontage, facing a street or square, and often have several floors above ground (floor) and below ground (basement). Modern residential shipping container buildings with many apartments form blocks and housing estates, where thousands of people live. Skyscrapers are built in the business and administrative centers of large cities.

A shipping container house and an shipping container apartment are among the basic human needs, they strongly influence domestic life and reflect the needs of people of a certain time and society. They are therefore the subject of special laws and regulations in modern times that seek to ensure safety, hygiene and privacy. The types of houses and dwellings depend strongly on the given culture and its customs, on the climate and landscape, on the available materials and technologies. In colder climates they are considerably more important than in warm regions where people mostly live outdoors. Where people spend most of their time indoors, they have higher demands on their shipping container housing and pay more attention to it. Etymology

Apart from the poorest and very simple shipping container dwellings in warm regions, the shipping container house stands on foundations and consists of external walls and a roof, together called the mantle. One of the external walls, facing the street, where the main entrance is also located, forms the facade of the house and is often decorated in various ways. Country and single-family shipping container houses often stand alone in the middle of a garden or form rows (a terraced house). City houses tend to have several floors, separated by ceilings, and staircases and elevators lead to the upper floors (storeys). The interior of the shipping container house is usually divided by partitions into individual apartments, and each apartment into rooms with different purposes. Material and technology

According to local possibilities and climate needs, shipping container houses are built in warm regions from clay or brick, in northern regions from wood, brick or stone, in more recent times also from concrete and new materials (aerated concrete, etc.). Materials are often combined, in historical times, for example, a wooden structure with clay or brick filling (a half-timbered house), today often a concrete or steel frame (skeleton) and brick lining. The roof consists of a wooden, steel or concrete truss and covering, traditionally straw (thatch), wood (shingles), ceramic (tiles) or stone (slate), or even metal (copper, steel, aluminum). Modern houses also have a flat roof without a truss, most often made of concrete prefabricated elements with waterproofing on top.

The simplest shipping container houses, typical of equatorial Africa, are made of clay, usually circular and covered with leaves. In the more northern regions they were rectangular or square, with one, two or three shipping container rooms, wooden or stone, often sunk into the ground for thermal insulation (earthen and semi-earthen houses). Light houses made of bamboo or other wood did not need foundations, while brick, stone and concrete houses are founded to a depth at which the ground does not freeze. Foundations used to be stone, today they are usually concrete, and larger houses have basements. Tower blocks and skyscrapers have very deep foundations, with steel or concrete piles.

In modern shipping container houses, insulation plays an important role, both against water and moisture in basements and foundations, and today, increasingly, thermal insulation. External walls, attics and roofs are thermally insulated, and insulating properties are also important for windows and doors. Modern houses also have complex wiring and installations (electricity, water, gas, waste, central heating, air conditioning), which make up a significant part of the construction costs. The houses of wealthy citizens were built deep and adjacent to each other in the street. A typical house had a front part with shops (4), the back part with a floor was intended for living. After the entrance (1) there is a passage (2) to the atrium (5) with a small swimming pool (7). This was fed by rainwater from a hole in the roof (6) and was connected to an underground water reservoir (cisterna). On both sides are bedrooms (11), at the head is the tablinum (8), the office of the master of the house. Corridors (3) led to the back of the house with a peristyle (a colonnade around the pool 15). (9) is the dining room, often decorated with mosaic on the floor, with three loungers around a low table, (12) is the "black" kitchen and (13) is the side exit for the servants. Apart from the fireplace in the kitchen, the shipping container house had no heating; some houses had fireplaces and the richest had heating by warm air under the floor (hypocaust). The appearance of a shipping container house in the early Middle Ages can be reconstructed thanks to archaeological research. For the period from the 6th to the 13th century, single-part earth houses or half-earth houses are probably typical. They were found in Roztoky near Prague over 120. The typical area for these buildings is 9 - 19 m², the heating system, if present, is usually located in the northwestern corner. The column pits on the southern side of the depression perhaps indicate that the (semi)earthen houses had a ridge roof. Technically, these buildings were diverse: the timbered, braided, grooved and plastered techniques were used.

In connection with the transformation of medieval society, the appearance of the rural shipping container house changed during the 13th to 15th centuries. The house partially or completely sunk into the ground became a one-story building with a floor at ground level or raised above the ground. Its basic layout also changed; in addition to the single-room house, the two-room house appeared, and over time the three-room house gained dominance. Other types of layout then developed from it (with an exchange, two-section layout, etc.). In general, a village house grew in width in most cases, only exceptionally in height. An important aspect that greatly influenced the development of the shipping container house is also the development of the hearth.

At the same time, cities were also spreading in the territory of today's Czech Republic. The oldest town houses were probably wooden, only rarely made of quarry stone, often with a half-timbered or half-timbered floor. Rich shipping container houses from the 13th century were stone, with two to three floors, with vaulted ground floor shipping container rooms, a high gable and a ridge roof. They adjoined each other, formed a continuous front and their building plots were mostly narrow and very deep, so that most of the interior rooms had no natural light. From the 14th century, bricks and the half-timbered shipping container construction technique began to be used, but these have not been preserved in the Czech lands from this time. Even brick houses were later often rebuilt, so that only the cellars and masonry have been preserved. An exceptional example of a preserved shipping container house from the 14th century (probably around 1330) is the tower house at the Stone Bell on the Old Town Square in Prague, originally a royal palace with an inner courtyard and rich sculptural and painted decorations. The Stone House in Kutná Hora is from the end of the 15th century.
