Nowadays, though, there is a ton of choice. You can choose between high VG and high PG, between nicotine salts and free base, between 10ml and shortfills and more.

In many ways that’s a good thing. The different options available mean that vaping can meet the needs of more people. But it can also be very confusing when you first start vaping!

We’ve put this post to explain what the different types of e-liquid are, and what needs they address, so that you can choose the right e-liquids for your needs.

Key terms explained

If you're knew to vaping, it's helpful to know a few key terms before you start! Common terms which can help when you are selecting e-liquid include:

MTL: When you inhale into the mouth and hold vapour briefly before inhaling into the lungs.

DTL: When you inhale directly into the lungs. See MTL v. DTL for more info.

Nicotine salts: A form of e-liquid that uses the salts found in tobacco leaves to create a smoother throat hit. E-liquid without nicotine salts is known as freebase e-liquid.

Bar salts: Double-flavour, often sweet, nicotine salts that replicate the flavour of disposable vapes.

Hybrid e-liquids: Contain both freebase e-liquid and nicotine salts.

PG: Propylene glycol. Used in e-liquid, it is thinner than VG, and creates more of a throat hit.

VG: Vegetable glycerine. Thicker than PG, it is slightly sweeter, smoother on the throat and creates larger clouds of vapour. See PG v. VG for more info.

Short-fill: A large bottle of e-liquid with no nicotine. There is a space at the top of the bottle to add a nicotine shot.

Nicotine shot: A small bottle of usually flavourless e-liquid that can be added to a short-fill.

Choosing the right nicotine strength

Jacques Houzec is a scientist who has spent a lot of time training vape shops and helping smokers to switch to vaping.

His experience is that most vapers choose nicotine strengths that are too weak for them to successfully switch. (Bear in mind that the maximum nicotine level allowed in the UK is 20mg (or 2%), which is far lower than the 5% levels that are sold in the US by the likes of JUUL.)

If you’re smoking 15-20 cigarettes a day or more, you are probably best off using the strongest e-liquid you can get, which is usually 18mg in a 10ml bottle.

If you smoke less, or if you prefer light/mild cigarettes (e.g. Silk Cut), you might be able to drop down to 12mg (1.2%), but if you find that vaping is not working for you, you will probably need a higher nicotine strength. Generally, when you start, a higher nicotine level is better, although many vapers do gradually drop down the strengths over time.

For a more detailed guide, see our post: E-Liquid & Nicotine: Choosing the Right Strength.

Vape juice for a strong throat hit

Cigarettes can be harsh on the back of the throat, and many people actually miss that when they stop smoking. If you are looking to replicate that throat hit, you need an e-liquid with plenty of propylene glycol.

The key here is to look at the VG:PG ratio. A VG:PG ratio of 50:50, gives enough throat hit for most smokers, although if you are looking for an even stronger throat hit you might look for a VG:PG ratio of 40:60.

When you first use a high PG e-liquid, Dr Houzeq advises taking a long drag and not allowing too much air in, as this can cause coughing. With both high PG and high nicotine e-liquid it's best to use vape hardware that is designed for mouth-to-lung vaping

It’s not just e-liquid that affects throat hit. For more tips, see our post 7 ways to tailor your throat hit experience.

E-liquids for a smooth throat hit

There are two ways to soften the throat hit of an e-liquid.

The first is to use nicotine salts. Nicotine salts are a relatively new innovation. They were originally introduced because vapers found the nicotine hit with very high strength e-liquids (legal in the US, but not available in the UK) was too harsh.

Nicotine salts, which utilise the original form of nicotine found in tobacco leaves, create a much smoother throat hit. It may also increase the speed of nicotine delivery, making it more satisfying.

Nicotine salts are very popular with new vapers and are ideal for smokers who prefer light/mild cigarettes and tobacco. However, if you are used to a strong hit on the back of the throat, they may not be for you. Examples of nicotine salts include Nasty Juice Salts, Ohm Brew and Halo Salts.

Another way to minimise the throat hit is to use a higher VG e-liquid. However, high VG e-liquids are best used with more advanced equipment. We talk more about this below under cloud vaping.

E-liquids for a disposable-style vape

Disposable vapes have taken the UK by storm in recent years - but the average vaper only uses a disposable vape device for three months before switching to a reusable device.

What, though, if you want to switch to a reusable device but have become wedded to the taste of disposable devices?

Then you're best off using a bar salt. Strong and often sweet in flavour, these are nicotine salts which are designed to replicate the taste of a disposable vape. Popular ranges include Lana E-juice and IVG Bar Favourites.

E-liquids for a cigarette-style vape

If you are looking to replace the feeling of a cigarette, there are two options.

The first is an e-liquid with more propylene glycol, typically with a VG:PG ratio of 50:50, which gives a similar throat hit to that of a cigarette. These e-liquids, best used with pod systems and lower-powered devices, are also best for a tight, restricted draw that more closely mimics a cigarette.

But recently, many vapers have reported that pod systems that use a combination of nicotine salts and regular e-liquid, such as the Hexa Pro, to enjoy a very realistic smoking experience. The Hexa is a closed pod system, but hybrid salts are also starting to be used in 10ml bottles,

Juices for open pod systems and starter kits

Starter kits and pod systems are usually designed for use with higher PG ratios (e.g. VG:PG 50:50). You can check this by checking the resistance of your coil. If the resistance of your coil is above 1 ohm, you are usually best off using a high PG e-liquid.

E-Liquids for cloud chasing

If your priority is to blow larger clouds of vapour, then you’ll be best off with short-fills. Short-fills are larger bottles of e-liquid, which come with a space at the top of the bottle to add a nicotine shot.

Short-fills such as Cotton & Cable and Nasty Juice usually have a higher VG ratio, such as VG:PG 70:30 or 80:20. The VG is responsible for the clouds, but do bear in mind that you need to use these with more advanced kits. That’s because the battery needs to provide more power, and the coil in your tank needs to be built to handle that power and a thicker e-liquid.

To handle the thicker e-liquids and produce those clouds, you also need to use coils with a lower resistance (typically well below 1 ohm) and with wider holes in the coil to help absorb the e-liquid.

Which flavour?

Flavour is very personal, and the best way to find the best flavour for you is to experiment, so we won’t write too much about it here. But one key thing to mention is that while many smokers start with a tobacco flavour, evidence suggests that smokers who start with a non-tobacco flavour are more likely to switch successfully. So even if you love smoking, it’s well worth experimenting with non-tobacco flavours from the off.

Conclusion

Choosing your first e-liquid can seem like a minefield when you see all the alternatives. But if you can identify your needs using the guide above, you can quickly narrow down the type of e-liquid you need to start with. And then you can start exploring the wonderful and varied world of e-liquid flavours!

How to Prime a Vape Coil For Disposable Vape it is vitally important to prime the coil before you first use it. Priming will ensure the coil doesn’t burn out and ensures you’ll get the perfect flavour and vaping experience from your device and e-liquid.

Priming your coil is quick and easy and we recommend following these simple steps.

Five easy steps to prime your vape coil

Apply e-liquid to the visible cotton parts of the coil. Most coils will have visible cotton on the top of the coil and on the sides. Allow the e-liquid to soak into the cotton until it is visibly wet with e-liquid.

If you get excess liquid into the airflow section of the coil either blow through the coil or flick the coil to clear it (we recommend doing this outside or over a sink). You can also wipe any excess liquid off the metal parts of coil with a tissue.

Coil priming - applying e-liquid to coil

Install the coil and fill your tank or pod with vape juice. You should now leave the tank to sit for up to 5 minutes to allow the e-liquid to fully saturate the coil.

Coil priming - leave the tank for 5 minutes before using

The next step is to take some puffs on the tank without firing the device. This will help to ensure the cotton wick is fully saturated with e-liquid.

If your device has automatic firing simply remove the tank or pod from the battery section before taking these ‘primer’ puffs. If the device gurgles or spits at this point you can again blow through it or flick the device to clear the airflow.

Coil priming - take some 'primer' puffs without firing the vape

Once you’re happy the coil is saturated with liquid you can start to fire the device. If possible,

we recommend adjusting the wattage to a lower setting before taking a puff. If there is any burnt flavour leave the tank for a little longer for the liquid to soak into the coil. You can now gradually increase the power to your desired setting.

Coil priming - start at a low wattage and slowly increase

You’re now ready to vape!

Coil priming - you're ready to vape!

If your coil is very small or you’re not sure how to complete step 1, don’t worry.

Simply increase the time you leave the tank to sit up to 10 or even 15 minutes to ensure the cotton is fully saturated.

There are many Type Vapes All over the world, but not everyone knows well about vaping, especially beginners.

Don't worry, in the following, we'll detail the two main styles of vaping. A mod pod kit and a vape mod kit will also be mentioned in passing as typical devices of both styles.

So after reading the article, you will have a comprehensive understanding of vaping.

The first vaping style is mouth-to-lung (MTL). My favorite device for this style is the Vapefly Galaxies MTL RDTA. When doing MTL vaping, you inhale the vapor into mouth and let will hover for a moment before pulling down into the lungs. This should be easy for any former smoker to master because it's the most used trick used when smoking cigarettes.

Normally, newer vapers prefer this style as it is very similar to cigarette smoking. Besides simulating the action of smoking, the overall sensation comes remarkably close. The burning or tingling in your throat (throat hit) is subtle, creating a smoother sensation when compared to the much harsher (and less authentic) direct-to-lung method.

Well, the other style is direct-to-lung (DTL). In my opinion, the best device for this style is the top lana mini. MTL vaping is all about inhaling the vapor straight into your lungs. In fact. it is no different from a normal breath. For recent ex-smokers, DTL vaping might be counter-intuitive if they're trying to simulate the sensation of smoking. You'd better avoid this vaping style until you become more familiar with vaping if you're one of them.

Differing from MTL, DTL vaping is pretty intense. And a throat hit may be the farthest thing from smooth depending on the nicotine concentration of the e liquid. Recall the first time you smoked a cigarette and almost coughed up a lung. After a time, you were less sensitive and able to smoke comfortably. When it comes to vaping, the situation is the same.

Both of the vaping styles have their own characteristics but work best with specific e-juice and device. Most vapers use one style or the other by default. However,

if you don't feel like you're really enjoying your vaping or want to open up new worlds, switching styles might be exactly what you need.

Vape not working? There are a few common culprits if you get less than satisfactory results.

Here are the most common areas for a disposable vape that won’t work, along with potential fixes to try:

  1. Ensure Your Device is Charged

The first port of call if your vape isn’t working is to check the charge or level of your battery. Many devices come with a light or indicator to show when the device is charged and/or firing.

Check for lights when you try and fire the device. No lights mean the device has run out of battery. With some devices, the light will pulse or flash several times if the battery level is low.

Suggested Fixes:

If your device is not rechargeable, then there isn’t too much you can do when it comes to dead batteries.

If you have a rechargeable device, plug it into the charger. Pay careful attention to whether this causes any lights to come on. You may have a dud if the device’s light remains out even when charging.

WARNING: Do not attempt to charge your device if it is not specified as being rechargeable. Batteries that aren’t meant to be recharged can swell, ignite or explode if you try to recharge them.

  1. Check the Mouthpiece

Your device may actually be firing, but something is blocking the vapor flow. The mouthpiece is the driving force behind sufficient airflow. It can be easily blocked (especially if you keep your vape in lint-ridden pockets).

Suggested Fixes

If the mouthpiece is removable, remove it and hold it up to the light to see if there are any obstructions.

With non-removable mouthpieces, use a toothpick or Q-tip to gently check if there is anything that could be blocking the mouthpiece.

  1. Check The ELiquid Level

One key area that causes disposable vapes to malfunction is a lack of e-juice. While manufacturers often offer a suggested ‘puff count’, this is based on average use. If you hit your vape longer or harder, there is a good chance that the juice will be exhausted sooner.

Suggested Fixes

It can be hard to check the eliquid level for most disposable vapes. A surefire sign of a lack of juice is a burned or harsh taste. If this is the case, it may be time to purchase a new one.

On some disposables, you may be able to remove the mouthpiece. Underneath the mouthpiece there is usually a rubber seal, along with a wad of cotton that is holding the ejuice. If this cotton looks dried up, then that’s a good indication that your disposable is out of ejuice.

  1. Check Airflow

The mouthpiece is not the only area to influence airflow. Many vapes have small air intakes that allow air to flow into your device. Due to the size of the holes, they can easily become blocked.

Also, some devices are activated by the vacuum effect of you sucking on the mouthpiece. Light puffs are sometimes not enough to activate the device.

Suggested Fixes

As with the mouthpiece, a toothpick or pin can gently clear away debris in and around the airflow holes.

If you have a draw-activated disposable device with more than one airflow hole, try covering up one of the holes and taking a draw. This increases the suction on the switch and also, due to the increased vacuum pressure, can sometimes clear debris from the other airflow hole.

How to Fix a Disposable Vape that Isn't Working - 2

  1. Gently Tap and Shake

Sometimes air bubbles can form in your juice reservoir, meaning it isn’t in contact with the coil. This can lead to muted flavor or a burnt taste as the wicking in the coil dries out. This is an easy fix, especially if your device is brand new.

Suggested Fix:

Give your device a gentle tap or shake to dislodge any air bubbles. Wait for a few minutes, and then try hitting your device again to see if there is any improvement.

  1. Take a Break

If you hit your vape often, the wicking material (responsible for ensuring juice flows to the coil) may be a little dry. This can lead to a weaker vape or, in extreme cases, a strong acrid or burned taste in your vape.

Suggested Fixes

Give your device a little rest. Five minutes is good, but ten is better. If you think you may have dried out your coil, give your disposable vape a couple of gentle shakes and swirls to ensure the juice will soak into the coil and wicking.

If your disposable vape is working and this happens often, consider reducing the number or strength of hits you take with each use.

  1. Disassemble Your Vape

Most disposable vapes come with few options for complete disassembly. While there are guides that will show you how to do it, it is not advisable. The inner components can be quite delicate, and there is a strong chance that even if you succeed in taking your device apart, it won’t be as easy to reassemble.

If you are the kind of vaper who likes to take things apart or wants more reliability, a good suggestion would be to check out some pod vapes. This way, you can replace faulty components, like a bad pod, without discarding an entire device.

  1. Consider a Return

Disposable vapes are mass-produced, and, as the name would suggest, they are generally a ‘use and throw away’ kind of deal.

Due to inconsistencies in mass manufacture, now and again a dud sneaks its way in!

Suppose you have tried all of the above steps without success. In that case, there is a strong possibility that you have just been unlucky and acquired a faulty device.

What can you do if your new disposable vape isn’t working?

As a ‘when all else fails,’ it is often a good idea to return to where you bought it from. If this is a brick-and-mortar store, they should be happy to exchange it with proof of purchase.

The overall care and maintenance of the battery must be grossly and continuously overlooked in order for a battery to explode.

Overcharging and overheating are two of the leading reasons why batteries don’t typically last as long as they should, however, these reasons very rarely lead to the batteries exploding.

In lithium-ion batteries particularly, there are many fail-safes that are put in place to prevent overcharging and overheating from happening.

In fact, lithium-ion batteries are so safe that there is a 0.0000001% chance of explosion.

Although there have been stories on how vape users experienced and were injured by their vaporizers combusting, sparking, or even exploding. However, it is important to note, all those incidents have led back to improper handling and misuse of the battery. Mishandling a battery regardless of what type of battery it is can trigger a chemical imbalance that results in an explosion. That is why it is important to always use the right charger to charge your device, this applies to all electronic devices, not just your vaporizer.

Battery charging bay vs. USB charging

Vape Battery charger or USB Cable - Best vape store

Most people charge their devices using a USB, it is without question the easiest and most common way to charge your battery. However, there are a few problems that can arise from charging with a USB,

namely, you risk providing insufficient power to charge the battery. This can result in having a battery that didn’t charge. You also risk overloading the battery which can cause it to be defunct a lot sooner.

Using a battery charging bay is the most effective way to charge your battery, however, it is a substantial financial investment. Although they are expensive, charging bays can be extremely beneficial and not just for your vaporizer but for other battery-operated devices you own.

Charging bays have many benefits namely:

Fast charging

Multiple charging ports

Charging bays have a chip that provides accurate and reliable charging

Even charging

Charging bays allow you to charge different sized batteries on the same device

Prevents overcharging and overheating

Increase battery longevity

Product recommendations

Proper handling of your battery can increase its longevity. Although instances like batteries exploding, sparking, or combusting are rare they are still within the realm of possibilities.

Not to mention that batteries, like any other mass-produced products, can have innate factory flaws that you know nothing about.

You can extend the lifespan of your battery by taking good care of it. Adhering to the manufacturer’s recommendations, and understanding what can compromise your battery life.

Step 1: Clean the Mouthpiece

The first step in fixing a burnt disposable vape is to clean the mouthpiece. This won’t necessarily fix the issue, but it can eliminate any unpleasant tastes caused by debris.

To clean the mouthpiece, wear gloves and use a Q-tip or a clean piece of tissue. Push the material as far down the mouthpiece as you can, and repeat until all debris is removed.

Step 2: Disassemble the Disposable

Many disposable vapes can be taken apart to access the internal components. Disassembling the device allows you to check the e-liquid levels and make any necessary adjustments.

To disassemble the disposable, remove the top of the device, take pictures of the internal components, and be careful not to disrupt or detach any wires.

Step 3: Check the Liquid Levels

Once you’ve disassembled the device, you should check the e-liquid levels. If the polyfill (cotton-like material that acts as the wick for your coil) is dry, you’ll need to add more e-liquid.

Step 4: Allow the Cotton to Soak

After adding e-liquid, you should give the cotton wick time to soak it up. This can take a few minutes, especially if your disposable vape holds a lot of e-liquid.

Step 5: Reassemble Your Disposable

Once the cotton wick has had time to soak up the e-liquid, you can reassemble your disposable vape. This should be easy if you took pictures of the internal components in step two.

Step 6: Take Primer Puffs

Finally, take primer puffs to get your device started again. Short, light puffs are best as they don’t force the internal mechanisms to run before they can walk. Take primer puffs at long intervals for an hour or so, or until your disposable vape is back to normal.

Using an external battery charger is also recommended in order to extend the life of your mod since charging the mod via a USB charger does slowly damage the device over time.

Slow Battery is the keyword here, though, and charging your mod with a USB charger from time to time for disposable vape

This, of course, assumes that your mod has a micro-USB port for charging.

Without a built-in micro-USB port, you’re going to need an external battery charger to recharge your mod, and a phone charger- or any other kind of USB charging cable- isn’t going to do you much good.

Thankfully, most mods do indeed come equipped with a micro-USB charging port.

To charge a mod using a phone charger, you’ll first need to make sure that your phone charger has a micro-USB adapter.

CellPhone chargers for iPhones that feature a lightning-port adapter and phone chargers that feature a USB-C adapter aren’t going to work.

So long as your phone charger is a micro-USB charger, though, charging your mod with a phone charger is as simple as plugging it in and waiting.

Just be sure to take your mod off the charger once the batteries are fully juiced and avoid leaving it on the charger for extended periods of time in order to preserve the life of your mod.

You may not want to hear this, but most rechargeable vape pens cannot be recharged using a typical phone charger.

Popular rechargeable vapes such as Lana Airship and Lana Mini come with their own unique charging ports and charging cables, and a micro-USB phone charger isn’t going to work unless you happen to own a rechargeable vape that has a micro-USB port.

If you do own a rechargeable vape with a built-in micro-USB charging port, all you have to do to recharge a rechargeable vape pen with a micro-USB phone charger is plug it in and wait.

Taking the vape off the charger once the battery is full is the best way to preserve the life of your rechargeable vape pen’s battery, but since rechargeable vape pens are many times more affordable than a good mod, extending the life of your rechargeable vape pen may or may not be as much of a concern.

Disposable vape pens aren’t designed to be recharged, meaning that they don’t include a micro-USB port where you can plug in a charger.

Instead, disposable vape pens are designed to be chucked and replaced the moment their battery goes dead.

The frustrating part is that disposable vape pens almost always run out of battery life before they actually run out of e-liquid.

This means that there will still be e-liquid to be enjoyed in your disposable vape pen after the battery goes dead, just no power left to turn it into vapor.

This leaves you with two choices: dispose of the vape and say goodbye to whatever e-liquid might remain in its tank, or channel your inner electrical technician for a little DIY ingenuity.

Since you’re here reading this article, we assume you’re more interested in the latter.

To charge a disposable vape pen with a phone charger, you’ll first need to expose the charger’s wires by snipping off the charger’s micro-USB adapter.

No micro-USB port on the vape means the adapter isn’t going to do you any good—just make sure you’re using a charger you don’t mind parting ways with as it isn’t going to be charging phones anymore once its micro-USB adapter is removed.

Once you’ve snipped the end of your charger, you should see two exposed wires—one with red insulation and one with black insulation.

Remove a little of the insulation on both wires so that at least a half-inch or so of wire is exposed, then set the charger aside.

Next, you’ll need to disassemble your disposable vape so that you are able to access its battery.

This can typically be done quite easily by twisting off the bottom cap of the vape using a pair of pliers.

Once this cap is removed, the entire assembly inside the vape—including the tank, the battery, the wiring, and the LED light attached to the cap—should slide right out.

Once you have the battery for your disposable vape in hand, you’ll need to locate the battery’s positive and negative terminals.

In some cases, the battery may be marked with black and red coloring to let you know which terminal is positive and which terminal is negative. Unfortunately, though, this isn’t always the case.

If the battery is marked with black and red coloring on its terminals, all you have to do is remember that red is positive and black is negative.

The battery may also have “+” and “-” markings to let you know which terminal is which.

If there are no markings present on the terminal, it is still possible to tell the difference by looking at how the vape’s assembly is oriented.

The negative terminal on a disposable vape’s battery will be the end that slides out first when you disassemble the vape, while the positive terminal will be the end that is closer to the vape’s tank.

After you’ve located the positive and negative terminals on the vape’s battery, plug the phone charger with exposed wiring into an outlet and hold the red wire against the positive terminal while at the same time holding the charger’s black wire against the battery’s negative terminal.

Don’t worry about getting shocked—so long as you are using a micro-USB phone charger, the current transported through the exposed wires will be so small that you won’t be able to feel it even when the wires are directly touching your skin.

Hold the wires in place for as long as you want, keeping in mind that a full minute of charging via this manner is likely only to buy you a few more hits on your vape before the battery is dead again.

Once you’ve charged the battery as much as you’d like (or run out of patience), slide the entire assembly back into the vape’s casing, replace the cap, and enjoy!

If you're a beginner to vaping you might have just started using starter kits, and the thought of wrapping your head around starter vape tanks might seem a little out of reach, but don't worry we are here to explain what they are and most importantly spill the beans on what the best beginner vape tanks are.

Beginner tanks, like beginner vape kits are exactly what they say on the tin, they were designed for beginners and are super easy to use, allowing beginners to use them easily.

There are a variety of different tank types out there, MTL tanks, Sub-ohm tanks and Rebuildable tanks.

Sub-ohm tanks are popular for advanced vapers and tend to have many features, and are much more fiddly. A sub-ohm tank also gives you the ability to vape at very high temperatures and wattages which can be overwhelming for new vapers, and sometimes harmful. The best sub-ohm tanks can be found here.

MTL tanks (mouth to lung) were designed for people that are used to a cigarette-like experience offering you a satisfying throat hit, and the ability to deliver e-liquid that has high nicotine contents. These tanks are usually aimed at beginners and people that want to quit smoking. The best MTL tanks can be found here.

Rebuildable tanks are designed for very advanced vapers that like to build their own coils.
